Blepharoplasty

What is Blepharoplasty?
A Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce puffiness and remove bags that form around and under the eyes. As people age, changes in the eyelids are common. Often, the skin of the upper and lower eyelids stretches, allowing the fatty tissue around the eyes to bulge, giving the eyes a puffy appearance. Dr. Berman may perform this procrdure in his office if you are the right candidate.

About the Blepharoplasty Procedure
A patient can elect to have either the lower lids or upper eyes done, or both at once, depending on their situation.

For the upper eyelids, Dr. Berman carries out a traditional Blepharoplasty, removing both skin and fat. Occasionally, I will recommend the non-surgical thermage as a treatment.

For the lower lids, Dr. Berman does something different than most surgeons: I make an incision on the inside of the eyelids (so there is no scar!) to remove the fat. Then I use a CO2 laser to resurface and tighten the lower eyelid skin.

The above 2 procedures are frequently done in the office. Dr. Berman gives his patients an oral sedatative and that is all that is required (besides the local anesthetic).

Sometimes, Dr. Berman will recommend that fillers be injected to hide the puffiness, instead of doing surgery to reduce the fat pads.

What Post-Op care is required for Blepharoplasty?
After a Blepharoplasty, your eyes should have a more relaxed, open appearance, and the skin around your eyes should be smoother.

Immediately following the surgery, the skin around your eyes could be slightly bruised for a few days. We provide an excellent cover-up makeup for this time, and most of our patients will take approximately one week from work to recuperate. The redness from the laser resurfacing will fade over the next 1-3 months. You must be vigilant about protecting your skin from the sun for at least 6 months after laser resurfacing. (We sell an excellent sun block.)

For the upper eyelid blepahroplasty, no special care is required beyond ice for 1-3 days and elevating the head of the bed.

For the lower eyelid blepharoplasty, I will have you use an eye ointment for 3-5 days on the inside of your eye.
