Lotions Vs. Creams – Which is Better for Your Skin?

Written by Nicole Hackett, Master Esthetician

There are a plethora of moisturizers on the market, but how do you know which one is best for your skin? Well, we have the answer!

The difference between lotions and creams is the way they are made. Lotions tend to be water-based and creams are more oil-rich, which makes them thicker.

Lotions absorb quickly, are light on the skin and hydrate without feeling heavy. Lotions are great for daily use and for those who have normal to oily skin. In the summer, if you’re feeling especially oily or if you live in a humid area, lotions would be best for your skin because they are water-based and won’t clog your pores.

Creams, on the other hand, are heavier and best for those who have dry skin. In addition, if you are getting chemical peels or laser treatments done, you should be using a cream post-treatment to protect the barrier of the skin and help lock in moisture. In the winter months, our skin tends to become drier, so adding in a nightly cream can definitely help.

In short, people that have dry skin would benefit from a cream and people with normal or oily skin should opt for a lotion. However, you should always  listen to what your skin is telling you. If you are feeling extra dry, that’s your body telling you it needs more moisture and vice versa.

We have everything from Dr.Berman’s Ultra Lite Cream to Obagi’s Moisture Rich-Cream. Call us at 703-406-2444 to schedule your complimentary, private consultation with one of our Master Estheticians – we’d be happy to help you find the right products for your skin!

Advantages of Sculpsure over Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck - Berman Cosmetic Surgery Blog

Common Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures: How They Work and How Long They Last

There are now some great non-invasive procedures available these days, providing long-lasting results with minimally discomfort or downtime. Below are a few of my favorites:

  1. FOR THE FACE: My favorite by far, is the Picosure laser. This laser is a true game changer. It is not super well known, because it is a very expensive laser for the doctor to purchase and therefore is not in a lot of physician offices. You are not likely to find this in a medispa either. What makes this Picosure Laser so special is that because it fires 1,000 faster than other lasers, it can do a facial resurfacing with NO DOWNTIME. This means that you can significantly improve the irregular coloration in your face, neck, chest and hands, with just 3 treatments, spaced a month apart. And again, with absolutely no downtime. .Also, because the Picosure fires so quickly, there is little inflammation – meaning it can be used in skin types 1-4 with little risk of hyper-pigmentation. It will also stimulate your own collagen and elastic production, which will help diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

How long do results last? This will vary from person to person. The most important thing is to use a good sun block (which we offer in the office) and good skin care after your treatment (also offered in our office). Good skin care that is pharmaceutical grade and can only be found in a doctor’s office, will continue with minor exfoliation and collagen stimulation. It can last a year or several years, depending on your genetics and how well you care for your skin.

  2. FOR THE BODY: Sculpsure is the most popular (and its competitor Coolsculpt) for spot reductions of fat in a completely non-invasive way.  Both of these techniques will destroy fat cells (Sculpsure through heat and Coolsculpt from freezing, which I feel has more complications) and these fat cells are permanently destroyed. They will not come back. However, it is important to work on better dieting and exercising to decrease your overall body fat. If, on the other hand, you eat poorly and put on fat, those remaining fat cells will expand in size and you will look larger. Thus, the total number of fat cells is reduced forever, however, there is no “free lunch” and you still have to look after yourself.
  3. LASER TATTOO REMOVAL: The Picosure laser is the very best tattoo removal laser that exists. It fires 1,000 faster than other lasers to vibrate away the tattoo pigment. You will need half the number of treatments with the Picosure laser than you will need with other lasers. I have seen pure black tattoos disappear after only 3 treatments. This laser rarely causes ghosting. It is also the only laser that removes blue pigments.
  4. LASER HAIR REMOVAL: With our Cynosure Elite laser, hair removal is permanent, unlike the less expensive lasers frequently found in medispas. However, when your hormone environment changes such as with pregnancy or menopause, you can get stimulation of dormant hair follicles. Most people will need 5-9 treatments to eliminate most or all of their hair. It should be noted that no laser treatments will work on white or blond hair or very fair hair.

Manual vs. Chemical Exfoliants

Exfoliating is a very important step in your skin care regimen if you want to improve the appearance of your complexion. Not only does exfoliating help your skin to look brighter, clearer, smoother, and overall healthier, it also allows for your other products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, making them more effective. When you exfoliate, you are sloughing off dead skin cells which helps to stimulate your cell turnover rate (which decreases the older we get). Exfoliants fall under two categories, manual and chemical.

Manual exfoliants tend to have a gritty texture with microbeads and typically come in the form of scrubs. Microdermabrasion is another type of manual exfoliant, and you can either use diamond tips or crystals to exfoliate the skin. When you are using manual exfoliants, you are literally scrubbing off dead skin cells. Because they are abrasive, it is very important not to over exfoliate because it can actually cause damage to your skin. A good rule of thumb when using scrubs to exfoliate is to use them only 1-3 times per week!

Chemical exfoliants use chemical solutions to exfoliate and stimulate collagen and elastin to the skin. The solutions are known as either AHAs or BHAs. AHAs are “water” loving meaning that they attract and hold moisture close to the skin’s surface and they work from the bottom of the epidermis to the top. The different AHAs are good for certain things, but in general they are preferred for those who struggle with dryness. The most common AHAs are Glycolic, Lactic, and Citric. BHAs on the other hand are “oil”-loving meaning they work to “de-gunk” pores and they work from the top of epidermis to the bottom. BHAs are great for people with oily, acne-prone skin. Salicylic Acid is the main BHA…which is also a main ingredient found in aspirin. If you are allergic to aspirin, you will want to avoid BHA products. Oftentimes a combination of AHA and BHA products can be very beneficial for combating skin issues and having a superior outcome!

Surgical Facelift Alternatives - Berman Cosmetic Surgery

Surgical Facelift Alternatives

People mistakenly believe that a facelift fixes your face and makes it perfect and instantly takes many years of aging off of your face. A facelift does certain things very well, but does not address many other aspects of aging.

What does a facelift do, exactly? A facelift is primarily designed to tighten the skin and underlying muscle of the neck and face. The most dramatic change occurs in those with a lot of loose neck skin. There is some improvement in the pre-jowl area and even less improvement in the naso-labial folds. Of course, one can add things like laser resurfacing, fillers or fat transfer and Botox, and a blepharoplasty. However, you can do these other things in the office, without paying for anesthesia or in an operating room facility.

So what are some surgical facelift alternatives?
Aging is multifactorial. This means that there is not one aspect of our face that shows our age. Just a few of the many things one can do to improve your face and delay for many, many years a facelift include:

  • Picosure laser:
almost every women over the age of 35 will develop areas of irregular pigmentation – areas that are darker and lighter than the rest of the skin. The Picosure laser, with break-through technology, fires 1,000 times faster than any other laser. This means that you can get your face (and neck and chest and hands) resurfaced, with NO DOWN TIME! You need to plan for 3 treatments, each spaced a month apart. The Picosure laser can also help with fine lines and soften your skin. It can even help with acne scarring (although this will typically require 6 treatments). It will also dramatically improve age spots on the face.
  • Chemical Peels:
We also offer an array of chemical peels such as the ViPeel, megapeels, and pharmaceutical skin grade products to further assist in this area.
  • Smartlipo to the submental area:
Most people develop fullness and slight sagginess to the upper central neck area (submental area). This area usually responds very nicely to Smartlipo. This area is quite small and does not require any oral sedation, meaning you can be in and out of my office in just 30 minutes and can return to work the very next day.
  • Facial Fillers:
As we age, we lose fat in our face and experience a deepening of the nasolabial folds. These respond very nicely to fillers such as Juvaderm, Voluma and Volbella.
  • Botox:
Crowsfeet, glabellar and forehead lines in particular respond nicely to Botox. These lines are a result of movement.
  • Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty:
The upper blepharoplasty is designed to decrease the redundant upper eyelid skin, while the lower lid blepharoplasty can help decrease the bulging and/or the redundant skin.

What is Microneedling, Exactly?

Have you ever fallen and scraped your knee? Once it heals and there is new skin, do you find that it looks softer and smoother than before? Microneedling is the same concept. With this treatment, we use a device that has tiny little needles which causes controlled micro-injuries. These send a signal to your body to produce more collagen and elastin. Therefore, it is great for people with fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, larger pores, and stretch marks. It is safe for ALL skin types and you’ll experience little to no downtime!

Before your treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to help reduce any pain you may feel. Typically, our patients say they don’t feel any pain, just the vibration from the device. Microneedling is awesome for your face but it can also be done on your hands, thighs, stomach, etc.

The healing time depends on each individual. Most patients generally look like they have a mild sunburn afterwards with redness and swelling. This can last up to two to four days following the procedure, but generally people see their skin go back its typical color in about 24 hours. It is recommended that you get between 3-6 treatments, and sometimes more, depending on how severe your condition is.

In order to achieve optimal results you must have a good at home care regimen and be consistent with that plan. And of course, our estheticians can help you build a great regimen tailored to your needs!

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen in the Winter?

Simply put, YES! Now that it’s getting cooler outside many people ditch their SPF, which is a big no no. Wearing daily SPF protection is critical to helping prevent aging. In fact, the rays from the sun are the #1 cause of aging. Even though it’s no longer summertime, you are still being exposed to UVA rays on a daily basis.

There are two kinds of UV (ultraviolet) rays to be concerned about: UVB rays, which cause sunburns, and UVA rays, which cause aging (fine lines and wrinkles). Even when it’s cloudy or rainy out, 70% of UV rays are able to penetrate through the skin. Even if you spend more of the day indoors, the fluorescent lights are emitting UV rays. And those UVA rays are actually stronger when coming through glass, meaning everytime you get in your car you should be wearing SPF!

If you plan on being outdoors for a long period of time, remember to reapply every 2 hours. When purchasing sunscreen, make sure that is says “broad spectrum”, meaning it has both UVB and UVA protection.

The Many Benefits of Retinol

Written by Nicole Hackett, Master Esthetician
When considering what products to use in your skin care regimen, Retinol, a form of Vitamin A, should be at the top of your list! This ingredient is the gold standard for anti-aging. Essentially, it increases the cell turnover rate, which starts slowing down the older we get.  Retinol comes in many different forms, including  creams, serums, moisturizers and gels.  You can also get prescription-strength retinol. When you begin using Retinol, start slowly (1-2 times per week) and gradually work your way up to using it daily if your skin can handle it.  Sometimes it can cause your skin to feel dry and you may experience some flaking. This is a sign to cut back the usage and to also apply a good hydrating moisturizer. It is highly recommended that you use products that contain Retinol at night, because it makes your skin sensitive to sun light, and be sure that you are using your SPF daily!
The top benefits of Retinol for your skin:
  • Diminishes the look of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Fights acne
  • Increases skin firmness
  • Improves uneven skin tone
  • Increases collagen production
  • Fights free radicals

Berman Cosmetic Surgery - 3 Summer Must Haves for your Skin

3 Summer Must Haves for your Skin

Written by Jacqueline Seabra, Master Esthetician

Summer is that time of the year when sweat glands and sebaceous glands are more active – meaning the skin clogs more easily. You need a good regimen to maintain your skin and keep it free of blemishes, while protecting it from harmful UV rays.

Seeing a need for a great skincare solution for our clients is what prompted Dr. Berman to create his own line of skincare products. As a master esthetician, I cannot say enough about our 3-step plan for gorgeous skin, which consists of a daily scrub, Vitamin C serum, and tinted moisturizer.

These 3 products are all you need to set the stage for beautiful summer skin:

  • CLARIFYING BRIGHTENING POLISH
This mild brightening scrub is environment friendly with micro-beads to gently and effectively polish the skin by removing excess oil, residues and impurities. As a brightening agent, it contains Arbutin, a natural brightener that inhibits melanin production, Glycolic and Salicylic Acids to assist with cell renewal, and Vitamins A, C, and E, which work as powerful antioxidants.
  • VITAMIN C SERUM
This unique serum delivers the most stable form of ascorbic acid to the skin using a special liposome-encapsulated phyto stem cell and peptide delivery system. This powerful antioxidant can be applied both morning and night to combat free radicals.
  • PERFECT TINT -SPF 50

This luxurious tinted moisturizer, enhanced with green tea extract, is the perfect combination of an antioxidant moisturizer and sun protection, made with 16.2% Zinc Oxide. It will also block both UVA and UVB rays. Its’ unique Universal Pigment Technology provides a sheer, healthy touch of color for all skin tones.

In addition to these 3 must-haves, our Berman Cosmetic Surgery skincare line has everything else you need to customize your skincare regimen according to your individualized needs and concerns. View the complete line >

Great skin is just part of your skin care regime. If you have more serious concerns you’d like to address, including hyper pigmentation, acne scars and fine lines,  you may want to consider our Picosure laser facial, which gives great results with NO downtime, or one of our popular skin care facials or chemical peels.
